In our new blog series, we are diving into some of our schools’ neighborhoods and sharing our favorite local parks, shops and places in the area. Our schools were created as community schools and we love being a part of all of our local neighborhoods! So, today we are looking at Jamaica Plain, JP as anyone who lives in the area calls it.
We actually have two schools in JP– one on South Street and the other in the Revere St./Green St. area.
The JP Revere St. location is located in the Sumner Hill neighborhood inside St John’s Episcopal Church, overlooking many historical Victorian homes of JP. This school has bright, sunny classrooms and a large hall for big group gatherings (when we can do that!) as well as an on-site fenced in playground that all of the kids absolutely love!
The JP South St. location is located in the former Harvest Co-Op, which we moved into in January 2017, relocating from our Centre Street location. The seven classrooms are big and bright with lots of light and walkable to local parks and playgrounds. https://pinevillagepreschool.com/locations/jp-south-st/
Here’s a few of our favorite spots to check out while you’re in the area:
Arnold Arboretum
With beautiful trails galore, spend a day or a week exploring the 281 acres of greenery at the Arnold Arboretum. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1872 and is part of Boston’s Emerald Necklace. Look out for events, bring a picnic or go for a hike! More info.
Courageous Sailing at JP Boathouse
If you are looking for kayak, row boat or sailboat rentals in JP, this is your spot! They also offer private sailing lessons and run a summer youth program. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a beautiful summer day or evening with your family. More info.
JP Licks original location
A local favorite, this JP Licks is the original location and your kids won’t let you walk past this one without a scoop of ice cream or tasty treat! More info.
Sam Adams Brewery
The original location of the national brewing company, check out a Sam Adams Brewery tour where you can learn about the history of the brewery and how the beer is made. Guests also have the opportunity to learn about the Sam Adams: brewer, patriot and cousin of President John Adams. Hint: Leave the kids at home for this one! More info.
Restaurants
For eats, check out a few of our favorites:
- Evergreen Eatery: for coffee, smoothies and teas. https://www.evergreeneateryjp.com/#drinks-section
- The Haven: For Scottish food and drinks. https://thehavenjp.com/
- Tres Gatos: For food, music and books all in the same place http://www.tresgatosjp.com/
- JP Seafood Café: A great spot for sushi. https://www.jpseafoodcafe.com/
And what would a Pine Village blog be without a list of playgrounds? Luckily JP has sooo many great neighborhood playgrounds located around the area, from hidden gems to larger versions where groups can gather. This local list is probably the best guide we’ve found that lays out all of the options with locations, playground type and how to find them.
