Veo, Veo (I Spy…): Spanish Tip of the Week

Do you ever play I Spy with your children? Well, you can play this fun game in Spanish, too! We call it Veo, Veo (I see, I see). You can play this game anywhere! You simply say, “Veo, veo something big, and blue.” Your child can try to guess what you are describing and give the answer in Spanish. They can say “Tu ves un carro?” which means, “Do you see a car?” If your Spanish is a little more advanced, you can try saying the whole phrase in Spanish! This game is so much fun and really helps your child practice his or her vocabulary, and yours, too!

For those of you who have smart phones, there are many translator apps out there you can download to help make practicing Spanish with your child easier. Some of these apps, are so simple that all you have to do is say the word into your phone in English, and POOF! The Spanish word is spoken back to you complete with correct pronunciation!

Here are a few apps to try (all free!):

iPhone: Talking Translator,   Talking Translations, or Say Hi! Translate

Android: Spanish Translator

There are also some pretty cool apps that actually “train” you in Spanish, complete with flash cards, quizzes, etc. It’s like Rosetta Stone right in the palm of your hand… for free! (Or maybe a couple of dollars.) Try Duolingo!

The translator apps are also a fun way to learn new words with your child. Point to objects you Moustachedon’t know the Spanish word for. You can say, “Como se dice…?” (Ko-mo say dee-say…?) Give it a try.

How do you say moustache in Spanish? Find out together with your child!
