PVP Brighton is Moving in September 2014!

We are pleased to share the news that Pine Village Brighton will be moving to a brand new building. In September 2014, Pine Village will move to the Charlesview complex at 370/400 Western Ave.

Although this is an exciting move for us, it is also bittersweet. The Brighton school was where Pine Village itself was born in 2001 in a little red brick building nestled between tall pine trees on the grounds of what is now Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School. Since the beginning, it has been a magical place for us – the history we have there is the history of Pine Village Preschool, and it is difficult for us to imagine leaving a place where thirteen generations of Pine Village children have passed through, leaving us with an infinite number of wonderful memories from over the years.

2_Western-Ave-Corner_IMG_0449 When we learned last year that Saint Joseph’s would soon have a need for more space for their growing population we began looking for a new location for our Brighton school. As this is where we began, it was important to us to remain in this community, and we are grateful to the local friends who helped us look for this new space. We were beyond thrilled when we learned that the brand new Charlesview site – located just a mile away from our current Brighton location – was seeking tenants. And we are so happy to announce that, just yesterday, we signed a lease for 4,200 square feet at 370/400 Western Ave. that we will be able to build out to our customized specifications.

5_Internal_IMG_0457After over a decade of growth – including building out four brand new schools – we have learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. For example, among our top priorities are: lots of light, sinks in every classroom, and specially-designed kid-size bathrooms accessible directly from the classrooms. (The picture at the right is an example from one of our classrooms at the Kendall Square school.) We will also have an onsite, fenced in green space/playground adjacent to the school itself.

The school is located right across Soldiers Field Road from Artesani playground and water park (the pedestrian bridge is one short block away), plus an expansive green space that borders the Charles River – right at the finish line for Head of the Charles, if you’ve ever been. It’s also just down the road from Smith Playground and playing fields, as well as the soon-to-be-built new Harvard Science complex.

We are in the process of scheduling a series of events to welcome families into the new location. More information will be posted here soon, but in the meantime, please contact Leslie at enrollmentpvp@yahoo.com if you would like more information about Brighton or another PVP location.

I was recently asked if I knew any teacher in Brighton. As incredible as it sounds, I know all of them! I’ve only worked at PVP for three years, but the community oriented culture in our midst makes it possible. The more I work here, the more I’m aware of our good fortune. Recent results in brain research show that bilingual children outperform monolingual children on tests of executive function. This skill is appears even in non verbal tasks! Selecting appropriate behavior in two different languages is way more than two digital codes for the same reality, it is literally a stretch of the mind and an enlargement of the soul. I am very honored to be part of Pine Village!
